The Colour Yellow and Latika’s Character
Yellow is one of the brightest colours, therefore stands out easily amongst crowds and it can also represent caution as we see with most of our roadsigns.
Little Latika started off wearing a dull shade of yellow and as she grew older, the yellow items of clothing that she wore became brighter. The brighter they became, the more Jamal needed to ‘proceed with caution’ in search for her as she was under difficult and dangerous circumstances having a gangster as a boyfriend.
In the train scene when Latika was attempting to escape from her gangster boyfriend, it was easy for Jamal to spot her but at the same time it was easy for the gangster’s ‘crew’ to spot and capture her within the busy crowd.
There could be double meaning if/when we refer to Latika as a ray of light: literally whereby the colour of her clothing enables her to stand out and figuratively in the sense that she brings happiness to Jamal’s life.
In the last scene Latika is wearing a simple yellow scarf. The scarf could be a representation of how simple it could be for her to throw it away and shred it to pieces (new beginnings for her and Jamal). Reason for her wanting to throw it away could be because of the rough journey she has travelled through life from when she was a little girl.

The significance of this statement is very powerful and symbolic; in Jamal’s case it represents his life. It basically means that whatever happened in his life was meant to happen, it was by fate that he went through such difficulties, everything happens for a reason. There is a reason why he went on the show and the reason was to reflect on his past experiences and the memories he had.
People think that the reason why he won the money was because he was either very smart or he cheated, but they didn’t know that he won because of his past experiences.
He went through all his experiences for a girl named Latika, whom he was in love with. He went on the show to find Latika because he didn’t know where she was, his intentions was not to win but to find Latika.
It was fateful that he went on the show ,to meet Latika again.

Salim, why did he go the way he did and Jamal went another direction?
When know that Jamal and Salim we were brothers that grew up closely together in the slums of Mumbai. Salim was the older one out of the two children, when their mother died Salim was force to take a responsible role because he had to look after himself as well as his little brother Jamal. We see in their earlier years that Salim had a little of jealousy towards is younger sibling, it is notice when Salim deliberately take Jamal’s autographed photo which was signed by a famous actor named Amitabh Bachchan.
Salim and Jamal were took in by an orphanage, which weren’t actually looking after the children, they would blind them in order to gain financial capital. Salim witnessed this first hand and they wanted to do the same thing to his brother but Salim made a plan to escape this place by jumping on the train with his little brother. The years went by and Jamal went looking for Latika, who he believed was the third musketeer, when he finally found her he discovered that she was working for Mamaman the same guy who wanted to blind him. Salim killed Mamaman with a pistol and they managed to get Latika to come with them
This is when they went their separate ways because Salim went straight to Mamamans rival slum gang and he joined them. After a night of drinking Salim came home and wanted sexual favours from Latika, this made Jamal angry and he threatened to kill him. Salim went into gangsterism because of his greed and jealousy this became his down fall, Jamal went down the correct path by getting himself a good job.
Slumdog Millionaire: Plot Summary
A chaiwallah (tea-maker) from the slums of Mumbai, India named Jamal Malik makes it big on the TV show Who wants to be a Millionaire?
Driven by his deep love and affection for his childhood crush and soul-mate, Latika, he is determined to succeed against all odds.
After many adventures with his brother, Salim Malik, he finds himself alone and they both go their separate ways. Salim finds himself going down the wrong path in his life and ending up killing himself for his brothers sake. Jamal who ended up on the most famous stage in India, which was the game show, Who wants to be a Millionaire.
In Indian society a slumdog is someone who’s in extreme poverty.
